چکیده

Strachan (i968) described a bilateral corneal dystrophy in a 62-year-old man, characterized by punctate, irregular opacities located mainly in the deepest layers of the cornea. The middle and superficial layers were involved to a lesser extent. The size and density of the lesions were sufficient to produce a distorted view of the fundus and to break up the red reflex. Some of the larger opacities produced stromal protuberances which made the posterior surface of the cornea irregular. The corrected visual acuity was 6/X2 part in each eye. Strachan regarded the disorder as a form of pre-Descemetic dystrophy. An apparently related disorder was described by Pillat (I939) in a girl whose

Alterations in stromal glycoconjugates in macular corneal dystrophy.

Nine biotinylated lectins were used as histochemical probes to localize the carbohydrates residues of glycoconjugates in normal corneas and in corneas with macular and granular dystrophy. The lectin binding patterns of normal corneas and of corneas with granular dystrophy were indistinguishable from one another, but were distinctly different from those found in corneas with macular dystrophy. C...

Corneal stromal dystrophies: a clinical pathologic study.

INTRODUCTION Corneal dystrophy is defined as bilateral and symmetric primary corneal disease, without previous associated ocular inflammation. Corneal dystrophies are classified according to the involved corneal layer in superficial, stromal, and posterior dystrophy. Incidence of each dystrophy varies according to the geographic region studied. PURPOSE To evaluate the prevalence of stromal co...

In vivo confocal microscopy of pre-Descemet corneal dystrophy associated with X-linked ichthyosis: a case report

BACKGROUND Pre-Descemet corneal dystrophy (PDCD) is characterized by the presence of numerous, tiny, polymorphic opacities immediately anterior to Descemet membrane, which is a rare form of corneal stromal dystrophy and hard to be diagnosed. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a useful tool to examine the minimal lesions of the cornea at the cellular level. In this article, we report a rare c...

Predictive diagnosis of myotonic dystrophy with flanking microsatellite markers.

Linkage was shown between the myotonic dystrophy locus (DM) and a highly polymorphic AC repeat marker within the kallikrein (KLK1) locus (Z = 3.00, theta = 0.0). Linkage between KLK1 and the highly polymorphic AC repeat marker within the apolipoprotein C2 (APOC2) locus, which had been established in normal families, was confirmed in myotonic dystrophy families (Z = 4.37, theta = 0.11). These hi...

Keratocyte apoptosis associated with keratoconus.

Keratoconus is an ectatic corneal dystrophy associated with stromal thinning and disruption of Bowman's layer. The purpose of this study was to explore a possible association between keratocyte apoptosis and keratoconus. Keratocyte apoptosis was evaluated in corneas of patients with keratoconus, corneas of patients with stromal dystrophies, and normal donor corneas using the transferase-mediate...
